WKCR 89.9 FM is Columbia University's student-run station in New York, first broadcast in 1941 and among the earliest college stations on FM, moving to 89.9 in 1956. Billing itself as 'The Alternative,' it is renowned for serious jazz programming, including the earliest radio performance by Thelonious Monk, and for the Stretch Armstrong and Bobbito Show, which shaped 1990s hip-hop. Jazz, classical and new music fill a proudly non-commercial, freeform schedule.
