WFMU 91.1, licensed to East Orange, New Jersey with studios in Jersey City, is the longest-running freeform radio station in the United States. Founded in 1958 as Upsala College's station, it survived the college's closure when its staff and listeners bought the licence, and it remains fiercely independent: no ads, no NPR affiliation, no playlists — each DJ programmes their own show. Rolling Stone named it America's best station three years running in the early 1990s, and its annual on-air marathon still funds it entirely.
