WFMU 91.1 began broadcasting in 1958 from Upsala College in East Orange, New Jersey, adopted freeform programming full-time in 1968, and is today the longest-running freeform station in the United States. Listener-supported and independent since 1995, now based in Jersey City, it lets every DJ play absolutely anything — obscurities, noise, comedy, forgotten singles.
