Switch FM has had two lives in Gisborne. It first launched on 1 May 2010, when founder Drew Kirk bought the 105.3 frequency to build a totally local station; thirteen months later, without enough advertising support, he sold the frequency and pulled the plug in June 2011. The name later returned on low-power 87.9 FM and online, streaming an eclectic mix — alternative, rock, drum and bass and local music — from New Zealand's first city to see the sun.
