Planet FM is Auckland's community access station, broadcasting on 104.6 FM. It began as Access Community Radio Auckland in 1987, secured a permanent home on 810 AM in 1989, then rebranded as Planet FM when it moved to FM in 2000. Based at Unitec's Mt Albert campus, it doesn't make programmes itself — it provides studios, training and airtime so Aucklanders can make their own, in more than 30 languages. In 2004 the NZ Peace Foundation gave it a Special Achievement Award for fostering tolerance and open communication.
