First heard on Waitangi Day, 6 February 2004, Retro Hit Radio began life as a low-power Auckland FM station, broadcasting on 106.9 FM in Otahuhu before moving to 88.1 FM at Goodwood Heights and later Kohimarama. After its FM years it relaunched as an internet station on 11 December 2013, opening with Janet Jackson's Escapade. The format is unapologetically nostalgic: a genre-crossing mix of 1980s and 1990s pop, rock, soul, dance, new wave, grunge and early hip hop, drawn from what New Zealand, Australian, British and American hit radio actually played at the time.
