Wellington's Radio Active began in 1977 as Victoria University's student station — its name a protest against the visit of the nuclear-powered USS Truxton — and on 22 February 1982 it became the first Wellington station to broadcast on FM. Now on 88.6 FM and run independently of the university, it remains the capital's home of alternative music and culture: an early champion of Shihad and Head Like A Hole, host of New Zealand's first hip-hop show in 1983, and rescued by a charitable trust in 2017. It is among New Zealand's longest-serving FM stations.
