An opt-out variant of BBC Radio Scotland, this extra service carries alternative programming — often live sport, particularly Scottish football — when the main station is broadcasting something else. BBC Radio Scotland itself has served the whole of Scotland since November 1978, mixing news, music and sport from studios in Glasgow. The Extra stream is carried on digital platforms so listeners can follow the additional coverage without losing the main schedule.
