WQXR 105.9 is New York City's classical music station, operated by New York Public Radio. Its roots reach back to 1936, when it began as the nation's first commercial classical station; long owned by The New York Times, it moved to 105.9 and became a listener-supported public station in 2009. Around the clock it carries orchestral and chamber repertoire, the Metropolitan Opera Saturday matinee broadcasts, New York Philharmonic concerts and the Young Artists Showcase.
