WNYU 89.1 FM is New York University's student-run station, on the air since May 3, 1973 and sharing its frequency with WFDU under a shared-time agreement. Broadcasting from Greenwich Village, it remains proudly free-form, but its legend rests on the New Afternoon Show, which flipped to new wave in 1980 and became an American launching pad for R.E.M., The Human League and Public Image Ltd, alongside New York acts like ESG and Liquid Liquid.
