WKCR 89.9 FM is Columbia University's student-run, noncommercial station in New York, on air since 1941 and broadcasting on FM since 1956. It is revered as one of America's great jazz stations: Phil Schaap's Bird Flight, devoted to Charlie Parker, ran on weekday mornings from 1981, and the station's marathon birthday broadcasts and annual Bach Festival are institutions. Classical, Latin, reggae and news fill out a resolutely free-form schedule.
