The oldest access station in the country, Wellington Access Radio has been on air since April 1981 and broadcasts on 106.1 FM from Mt Kaukau across Wellington, Porirua and the Hutt Valley. Based on Ghuznee Street, the non-profit station airs more than 80 programmes in over 25 languages, made by the communities themselves — migrant and refugee voices, disability advocates, faith groups, students and arts programmes. A founding member of the Community Access Media Alliance, it remains the template for access broadcasting in New Zealand.
