WDET 101.9 FM is Detroit's public radio station, owned by Wayne State University. Its origin is unlike any other: the United Auto Workers launched it in December 1948 as organised labour's own voice, then sold it to the university in 1952 for exactly one dollar. Today WDET blends NPR news with deeply local Detroit reporting and music programming, and was named Michigan's Public Radio Station of the Year in 2021 and 2022.
