WAMU 88.5 is Washington, D.C.'s flagship NPR station, licensed to American University, whose name the call letters carry. It made its first FM broadcast on October 23, 1961, and was a founding member of National Public Radio in 1971. Today it is the capital's primary NPR news source, mixing national programmes with its own productions — most prominently 1A, the daily national conversation show it launched in 2017 — for the Washington metropolitan area.
