VOA Learning English is Voice of America's classroom for the world. The service began in 1959 as Special English, and its broadcasts are still read at about one third of normal speed using a core vocabulary of roughly 1,500 words. News reports, science and technology features, education stories and American life segments are written to be understood by learners at intermediate level, making it one of the longest-running English-teaching broadcasts anywhere.
