The Hits is NZME's contemporary hit radio network, created on 28 April 2014 when the long-running Classic Hits network was rebranded. Its stations grew out of heritage local broadcasters, some dating back many decades, and most markets still get a local breakfast show before the network programme takes over. The format blends current chart hits with big throwbacks, celebrity interviews and competitions, aimed squarely at listeners under forty. Local news, weather and community events keep each station grounded in its own town or city.
