St Ita's Hospital Radio was one of Ireland's most remarkable broadcasting stories: a volunteer-run hospital station based at the St Ita's Hospital campus in Portrane, north County Dublin. It began broadcasting in December 1983 as an unlicensed service for patients and staff, later continuing on low-power 89.5 FM and online, with a special ministerial dispensation that made it effectively Ireland's first licensed independent station. For more than forty years its presenters provided music, requests and companionship to the hospital community before the station closed in November 2024, its legacy carried on by former volunteers through a successor online service, HospitalRadio.ie.
