Radio Caroline is the most famous name in pirate radio history. Founded by Ronan O'Rahilly, it began broadcasting at Easter 1964 from the ship MV Caroline off the Essex coast, winning an audience of millions and provoking the 1967 Marine Broadcasting Offences Act. After decades at sea on the Ross Revenge, Caroline today broadcasts legally on 648 kHz AM from Orford Ness, plus DAB and online.
