MidWest Radio is the long-established local station for County Mayo, broadcasting from Clare Street in Ballyhaunis on 96.1 FM, with relays serving Achill, Belmullet, Westport and Ballina. It began official licensed broadcasts on 24 July 1989 — the first station outside Dublin to come on air under the new licensing regime — though its roots go back to popular pirate broadcasts in 1979 and again from 1985 to 1988 under founder Paul Claffey. Owned by County Mayo Radio Ltd, it remains one of Ireland's most listened-to local stations, mixing music, news, sport and talk for an adult audience across Mayo and into neighbouring counties.
