From its studios on Clare Street in Ballyhaunis, Midwest Radio has been County Mayo's soundtrack since its official launch on 24 July 1989. Founder Paul Claffey had run pirate versions of the station in 1978 and again from 1985 to 1988 before winning a licence. Broadcasting mainly on 96.1 FM, with relays including 97.1 for Achill and Belmullet and 95.5 for Ballina, the County Mayo Radio Ltd station spills into Sligo, Roscommon and Galway, and ranks among Ireland's most listened-to local services, rooted in Irish and country music.
