Mai FM began broadcasting to Auckland in July 1992, founded under Ngāti Whātua’s Mai Media and long run as an iwi station before MediaWorks took ownership on 31 March 2008. On Auckland 88.6 FM and in markets across the North Island and Christchurch, it is New Zealand’s largest urban contemporary network, promoting Māori language and culture while playing hip hop and R&B. Networked from Auckland and aimed at under-35s, its breakfast and daytime shows front a format that has shaped Kiwi youth radio for three decades.
