KPFA 94.1 in Berkeley is where listener-supported radio began: pacifist Lewis Hill put it on the air in 1949 as the first station of the Pacifica Foundation, funded by listeners rather than advertisers. Its free-speech ethos produced landmark alternative news and public-affairs programming, including Democracy Now! and the morning show The Morning Mix, alongside eclectic music. More than seventy-five years on, KPFA remains a defiantly independent voice for the San Francisco Bay Area.
