Phoenix's NPR member station has been on the air since February 22, 1951, when it signed on as KFCA — the city's first FM station, broadcasting with just 10 watts from Phoenix College. Now owned by Rio Salado College and broadcasting at 91.5 FM from Tempe, KJZZ serves the Valley of the Sun with NPR news and local Arizona reporting by day, then jazz and blues after hours. Its call letters, adopted in 1985, still nod to that jazz heritage.
