KEXP (90.3 FM) is Seattle's listener-powered music-discovery station, operated by the nonprofit Friends of KEXP in affiliation with the University of Washington. It began in 1972 as a tiny 10-watt student station, KCMU, became community-supported in 1981, and took the KEXP name in 2001; it was among the first stations anywhere to champion grunge. Today its DJs program indie, alternative, hip-hop, world and more, famous worldwide for live in-studio sessions streamed online.
