George FM is New Zealand’s leading dance music station, owned by MediaWorks. It began in 1998 as a volunteer-run low-power station in a Grey Lynn spare bedroom, set up by brothers Thane and Richard Kirby, went city-wide on a full-power frequency in 2001, turned commercial in 2003 and was bought by MediaWorks on 16 February 2009. Broadcasting on Auckland 96.6 FM and frequencies nationwide, its presenter-led format gives specialist DJs control of their selections across house, drum and bass and electronic music.
