Boston's classical voice, WCRB 99.5 is licensed to Lowell, Massachusetts and serves Greater Boston with classical music around the clock. The station's classical heritage on the frequency reaches back to the 1950s; its modern era began on 1 December 2009, when the WGBH Educational Foundation acquired WCRB and converted it to noncommercial, listener-supported operation as part of its public media family. Today it is one of America's flagship classical services, mixing core repertoire, live Boston performances and specialist evening programming.
