Licensed in 1973, CKWR 98.5 in Waterloo was Canada’s first licensed community radio station: a non-profit, volunteer-run service that has been broadcasting ever since. Operated by Wired World Inc., it mixes local news and classic rock with an extensive multicultural schedule for Kitchener, Waterloo, Cambridge and Guelph. Its call letters stand for Kitchener-Waterloo Radio, and it remains the region’s only locally owned station.
