Burn 729 — now Burn Radio — is the voice of the Maniototo, the high-country basin around Ranfurly in Central Otago. The station began in 1991 with a test transmitter in founding technician Ewan Mason's spare bedroom, and the community rallied repeatedly to keep its only local station alive. Broadcasting on 729 AM and 92.3 FM from the Fenton Library in Ranfurly, volunteer presenters are live from 6am to 6pm on weekdays with local news, community notices, job vacancies and birthday calls, plus music stretching from the 1950s to today.
