The Bhutan Broadcasting Service (BBS) is Bhutan's state-owned national broadcaster, based in Thimphu, and remains the country's principal radio voice. It began in November 1973 as Radio NYAB, a half-hour Sunday mix of news and music run by young volunteers; the government took it over in 1979 and renamed it the Bhutan Broadcasting Service in 1986. Today it reaches the whole kingdom on FM and shortwave (6035 kHz), broadcasting in Dzongkha, English, Lhotshamkha and Sharchop.
